This is the review of the new single by Matt East on Live Music Scene
"Matinee have clearly taken some inspiration from the Kooks on their debut, ‘City Lifestyle’. The song is very much the norm for this faux rock ‘n’ roll style of the 21st century - nothing like the big hitters of the bygone eras in the 60’s through 80’s. Sometimes it makes you wonder what John Lennon would make of the state of British rock nowadays. Of all genres, it’s had the most dire fall from grace.
After a few slow opening words, ‘City Lifestyle’ is quick to cut to the chase; it’s very boppy, with choppy guitar riffs. One good point about this band is, even if they are no rock stars, they can, at least, create a compelling melody - one that is present throughout the whole song, rather than fading to nothing. The rest of the track continues very much in the same way it starts, sometimes the upbeat guitar playing is interrupted by a slight change in rhythm, sometime not - its sadly never that interesting.
‘City Lifestyle’ is nothing like what Matinee are capable of; they clearly show signs of promise. They are able to create strong melodies, hopefully one day a good song will follow. The band is a victim of musical fashion, in a world where R ‘n’ B is flavour of the decade and rock has never been more uncool, bands like Matinee are struggling. Do they play it safe for moderate sales, or explore new music horizons and never get exposure? In this sense, ‘City Lifestyle’ is probably the best type of rock we can hope for."
